Web1791 – Completed in 1791, Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine. The original plan was for a 58-foot tower which ended up being changed to a 72-foot tower from base to lantern deck. It was lit with 16 whale oil lamps and was first lit on January 10, 1791. Part of the issue was that the keeper was storing a year’s supply of oil in one room, which putting great stress on the floor. Repairs were completed, and an oil shed was installed.
