It is amphoteric, paramagnetic and has a typical blood-red color if finely ground. It has a hexagonal close-packing structure, even though an alternative cubic close-packed structure is also known, if mild oxidation of Fe3O4 is provided.
The most common catalyst is granular alumina (aluminum oxide) coated with iridium.
